NHS Education for Scotland (NES), with its geographic remit of delivering Scotland-wide training and education services to NHS Scotland staff, was very keen to trial a technical infrastructure that would support flexible ways of working including home-working. This solution would also need to conform to the NHS Code of Connection.
The introduction of the Secure-IT VPN Broadband Solution from BMS initially enabled 25 users to work remotely and securely access the NES network. These users had secure access to email, diary, personal filing systems, intranet, and applications.
Following the pilot the demand for the expansion of the service became clear and currently 200 users are ‘live’ and working flexibly from a variety of locations. The solution has proved to be very popular that there is now a waiting list of potential users and it is envisaged that further expansion is likely.
“The key benefits of the BMS Secure-IT solution are that it is remarkably easy to set up and the tokens are very user friendly” said Dr Dennis Connolly, IM&T Manager at NES. “The product is highly scalable and will meet our future needs”.
Fearghas Torrens, Network Manager at NES stated “BMS have supplied us with a robust and competitively priced solution. They provided a total turnkey solution, from supply to installation, including training and support, they even arranged the Syop required Penetration Test”.
The core components of the solution consist of: -
Staff at NES have been delighted with the solution and in a recent survey many users reported that they now rely and depend upon the remote access service. In addition, users stated that the remote access service assisted them to improve their work/life balance.
Dennis went on to say “During the whole process BMS excelled in their technical support of our solution, including the installation and configuration. The BMS tokens are also very user friendly. The ongoing technical advice received has been exceptional - full marks to BMS”.
Dennis concluded “The service has been very well received by all users, and is now regarded as an important and critical asset in our plan to continue to roll-out flexible working practices across Scotland”.
